THE BUZZ: Chloe is notable for many reasons: production was close to wrapping when Liam Neeson's wife, Natasha Richardson, passed away; Atom Egoyan hasn't flirted with potential mainstream success in over a decade; Amanda Seyfried needed to play an unsweeted character such as the titular Chloe. We hear the third act goes a little over the top (yay!) and that Julianne Moore owns the film, which is a remake of Coco Before Chanel writer-director Anne Fontaine's...

Review:
Dreadful. As a romantic thriller in which an impressionable, scheming nymphette gets dragged into a couple's mid-life wobble, there's a fair bit of sex - imagined, evoked, solipsistic. Well, this is treated fetishistically by Egoyan, pornographically, filling in the blank spaces after emotional sequences. There is nothing to invest the sex with any danger or meaning. I don't buy the idea of Catherine getting entangled with Chloe through some sort of strange, sexual-metaphysical transposition. It just seems like an excuse for two attractive women to get it on.

THE BUZZ:
Mumblecore goes semi-mainstream with a hipster director and a star we always like best in indie mode. The notes the trailer strikes are precious and twee, but we imagine the entire story is a bit more nuanced than that. However, that doesn't stop us from wondering if this is trying (really hard) to be American Beauty for the newly unemployed generation.

Review:
Enjoyable romp through planet Baumbach, although not quite as successful as The Squid and the Whale. If self-absorbed and angst-ridden wealthy liberals can be tapped for witty dialogue, Noah's your man, and this one is a slight departure in that it has a nice dog and (more importantly) a charming lead in the shape of Greta Gerwig - who offers a great foil to the unrelentingly narcissistic Greenberg. Rhys Ifans seems a bit lost, given that his character is not turned up to 11, and Jennifer Jason Leigh is only fleetingly present, so doesn't get much to do. LA makes a change from New York, though the sensibility is very much of the NYC (of Baumbach) transposed.

THE BUZZ:
It's so worth celebrating the long-awaited return of Lilo & Stitch co-directors Dean DeBlois & Chris Sanders to the animated world (though DeBlois did make Heima, a stellar documentary on the band Sigur Ros). DreamWorks Animation has been on a roll since Kung Fu Panda, and the fan reaction to Dragon's teaser art (located above) was strong, so I think we can expect a full-on marketing blitz, awkward promotional tie-ins included. For example: "Train your thirst at 7-11."

Review:
I saw this film in early March, of 2010 in Indianapolis. I am one of the judges for the Heartland Truly Moving Picture Award. A Truly Moving Picture "…explores the human journey by artistically expressing hope and respect for the positive values of life." Heartland gave that award to this film.

It's in 3-D and it's gorgeous animation. But what really matters is the story. And it's a good one. At first it seems the main story is about a Viking colony equally distant from nowhere, which is being constantly attacked by a wide variety of marauding dragons. It's a full time job trying to keep the dragons at bay and the Viking warriors are often out on their boats hunting their wily and ferocious opponents.

THE BUZZ:
With the Triplets of Belleville producers behind him and an Oscar nomination for his first feature, Tomm Moore is, quite simply, a director to watch. Kells, which is steeped in Celtic folklore and seems to champion a host of animation styles, also heralds the emergence of mini-distributor GKIDS as a big-league contender (they put out Sita Sings the Blues a couple years back). And speaking of Belleville, did you know that Sylvain Chomet's new film just premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival?

Review:
The Secret of Kells is an independent, animated feature that gives us one of the fabled stories surrounding the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript from the Middle Ages featuring the four Gospels of the New Testament. I didn't know that this book actually exists, but knowing it now makes my interpretation and analysis much a lot easier. There are a few stories and ideas floating around about how the book came to be, who wrote it, and how it has survived over 1,000 years. This is one of them.

We are introduced to Brendan, an orphan who lives at the Abbey of Kells in Ireland with his uncle, Abbot Cellach (voiced by Brendan Gleeson). Abbot Cellach is constructing a massive wall around the abbey to protect the villagers and monks. Brendan is not fond of the wall and neither are the other monks. They are more focused on reading and writing, something Abbot Cellach does not have time for anymore. He fears the "Northmen," those who plunder and leave towns and villages empty and burnt to the ground.

THE BUZZ:
Overture Films lost a bundle with Righteous Kill but the reunion of Ethan Hawke and his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua is pretty much a can't-miss shot at success, right? The trailer offers equal doses of machismo, stress, and style, though I paid the most attention when Don Cheadle shared the screen with Wesley Snipes, since their wedge of the story reads as though it has the most layers -- even though we've watched an infinite number of cops get way-too-undercover over the years. Also: Couldn't Mr. Fuqua direct a film like this in his sleep at this point in his career?

Review:
It seemed more like a "crash" or "pulp fiction" movie, how the plot lines inter tangled with each other, which was pretty effective, but they really didn't finish as nice as I would have liked to see...the director missed a perfect chance to do so... Does it mean I didn't like it? No...it was very entertaining, as the acting made the movie. Wait for the DVD though.

BUZZ:
I am one of those people who feels that Tim Burton's artistic vision is directly in line with Lewis Carroll's novels, and he is one of few filmmakers who can get away with asserting that a likable movie adaptation has never been made of this story. It is, of course, interesting to hear this from the man who made Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Review:
I was able to catch a prescreening of Alice in Wonderland tonight on March 2nd. Despite some pretty nifty visuals, and jaw dropping set pieces, I found the movie to be incredibly dull, flat, and utterly full of itself. The film is merely a vehicle for Johnny Depp to showcase his talents, and he portrays the Mad Hatter as an actor who can't quite find the right shoes to fill in the role. He rotates from a Scottish brogue, to a feminine lisp, and staggers once in awhile as the unmistakable character of Captain Jack Sparrow...

THE BUZZ:
A huge hit in its native Sweden, Dragon Tattoo has already been optioned by Sony for a remake, with Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List) scripting and the lit-minded Scott Rudin producing. The movie's two sequels were released within a year of the original, so it'll be interesting to see who's cast in the potential franchise. And I imagine it means a whole chunk of additional change for the estate of novelist Stieg Larsson, who passed away right before the first novel was published.

Leonardo DiCaprio was once set to star alongside Jude Law in this adaptation of Matchstick Men writer Eric Garcia's novel (Garcia wrote the screenplay with "House M.D." scribe Garrett Lerner). We love that Universal, who put out Cirque du Freak at the end of 2009, is taking chances with their projects, even if Repo! A Genetic Opera bombed (despite its cult status) and Repo Man's Alex Cox is having a title fight with the studio.

Review:
I went into the early screening of this movie tonight with low expectations, having not heard much about the movie, nor seen any trailers. I was floored! The cast is great in their parts and the script is hilarious. If you like any of the Judd Apatow films (I don't think he was a part of this movie, but it is the same kind of humor) then you will like this one. Fans of Knocked Up will recognize Jay BarucheI who plays the awkward lead with weak self esteem, and he is as cute as ever. I also had a chance to meet the lovely Alice Eve, who attended the screening and she was very nice and very beautiful. I hope to see more of her in the future. While this wasn't Shakespeare, it was a great laugh and very fun to see with friends.

Review:
I can't shake off the nasty feeling that this is yet another thinly disguised attack at modern Britain (hence Capitalism), presenting it in a hysterically negative light, exaggerating every step of the way with absurdly immoral doctors, cops, and just about everyone else. A bleak mood is all well and fine, but let's not get carried away...

In fact, I checked out Paul Greengrass's biography - and "surprise": yet another anti-Capitalist. "United 93" is also manic, laughable and designed to be controversial rather than intelligent. The fact that this talentless writer has been championed by people such as Allen Ginsberg and Henry Rollins really says it all... Henry Rollins has a brain the size of a peanut.
